A red cultivar from Jeffers Nursery in Ohio; believed to be
a hybrid cross between Red and Silver Maple. The deeply-lobed
rich green leaves turn an excellent orange-red in the fall. An
excellent grower, with upright branching and a dense oval head.

This cultivar develops brilliant scarlet fall color about two
weeks earlier than other red maples—with the leaves staying on
the tree well into autumn— making Autumn Flame the tree of
choice in areas where early frosts are common. It is also noted
for its smaller leaves, dense branching habit and its shapely,
well-rounded form. A personal favorite.

A cross between Red Sunset and Autumn Flame by Denny Townsend at
the U.S. National Arboretum tree improvement program. This
cultivar is significant because of its potato leafhopper
tolerance, excellent red fall color, but most of all for its
superior round dense form and branch structure. This plant fills
out perhaps the best of all the rubrums.
